Arson Threatens Firefighters and Resources
The MLA for Cumberland South says arson creates a huge waste of firefighting resources and is a direct threat to firefighters.
Tory Rushton was responding to questions yesterday on Six Rivers Radio when asked about the two suspicious fires near River Philip on the weekend.
Rushton was formerly the chief of the Oxford Fire Department who has seen his share of fires deliberately set.
The two fires happened just after midnight last Saturday, about fifteen minutes and twelve kilometres apart.
Rushton noted four fire departments were pressed into service for a few hours in the dark of night.
He said they are volunteers with jobs and families who need them. They should not be put at risk by somebody intentionally setting fires.
It follows a long run of intentional fires between Collingwood and Springhill early last year. Late in the year, a man was arrested following a number of fires set around New Salem.
The RCMP are investigating the latest fire calls.
The photo shows firefighters and political leaders from across the county meeting in Springhill last year to discuss details of a series of intentional fires that plagued the Collingwood/Springhill area.
