Canoe Cove Saturday Comes to Six Rivers Sunday

When is a Saturday night radio program broadcast on a Sunday? When it’s very special, that's when — and it is special today!

Eric MacEwen's Saturday Night in a Harbour Town will make its debut this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock (and every Sunday afternoon) on Six Rivers Radio.

MacEwen, a veteran of more than fifty years in broadcasting, produces the unique show from his home studio in Canoe Cove, PEI, just across the Northumberland Strait from Pugwash.

As a young Newfoundlander he sensed the call to what he called “show business”. He dropped out of a pre-med program, in his third year, and enrolled in a college near Boston that offered a program in an arts program leading to radio. The rest, as they say, is history.

An early favourite on the college radio station, MacEwen soon caught the ear of commercial radio stations and a career that started in Boston.

Though not a typical Newfoundlander, he could not resist the call home and eventually made his way back the “The Rock” as an on-air personality in St. John’s.

Over the next decades he entertained over the airwaves in Charlottetown, Sydney, and Halifax. But, he wasn’t just sending out songs, he was collecting them.

MacEwen amassed an amazing collection of culturally unique recordings that remain the epitome of traditional east coast music. The Cape Breton fiddle’s rendition of Scottish heritage, the unmistakeable flavour of the Irish jig, and the emotional and heartfelt story-telling of singer-songwriters from all around the shores.

Failing in his attempt to retire, MacEwen opened his musical vault and Saturday Night in a Harbour Town was born. However, it is not just the preservation of a distinct musical genre that makes the show so special, it is the vast experience he had while collecting it. Your Saturday Night — now Sunday afternoon — DJ, peppers the program with stories and anecdotes from the hundreds of special guests he met through the radio years.

MacEwen, part host, part poet, part historian is an east coast treasure with an east coast treasure chest of down-home culture.

Listen this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, then stay tuned for his weekly dose of warm-hearted affection on our special Sunday replays of Saturday Night in a Harbour Town, right HERE on Six Rivers Radio.
