Doctor Shortage Now Affecting Nursing Homes
The Progressive Conservative critic for long-term care says the Liberal government’s failure to recruit doctors is causing upheaval and concern for seniors who reside in long-term care.
Barbara Adams was referring to recent reports from homes in Debert and Truro. Families of residents of Debert Court and Cedarstone Victoria Way in Truro received letters from the management advising the lack of physician coverage was forcing big changes. The two long-term care homes are now refusing to allow residents return home after care in hospital.
“Many seniors live in nursing homes because their families can no longer meet their medical needs and doctors are an important part of that care,” Adams said. “The situation at Debert Court and Victoria Way is a shocking symptom of a crisis that is failing vulnerable citizens.”
Only the two homes were named, but people are worried in all long-term care homes. They fear a trip to the hospital may result in being evicted from their homes.
The East Cumberland Lodge provides medical care through doctors and a nurse practitioner who visits the home on a regular basis.
