Massive Outage Hit Cumberland Rural Internet
The company charged with the responsibility of bringing internet to rural Cumberland County suddenly went offline yesterday.
The Xplornet wireless network went dark early yesterday morning and was out of service for much of the day.
What started out as routine maintenance turned out to be anything but routine. An employee in technical support said, “Yesterday’s maintenance ended up in emergency.”
The outage affected the entire network of towers that provide internet and telephone services to much of the county.
The technician said it was an issue with the ‘backhaul’, a term used to describe the main transmission that feeds the recently installed towers such as those in Springhill, Port Howe, Pugwash and other areas.
Technicians had to bring in replacement parts to get the system back online.
Some customers went without internet service for several hours without explanation. Callers to the company’s support lines waited on hold for more than an hour.
The service was restored late yesterday and appears to running as normal today.
