New Pugwash Hospital Building Momentum
A new hospital in Pugwash seems to be more real now than ever before. Work is happening on several fronts and the premier seems ready to unveil the details.
The long promised hospital will be built behind the existing facility. The province is negotiating to buy the land from the Municipality of Cumberland. It stretches from the current building to the East Cumberland Lodge requiring a relocation of the current heliport for Lifeflights. A new heliport is already being prepared behind the Pugwash Fire Department.
Local officials have been briefed on the project. The chair of the former Community Health Board says, “I want to believe it.” Peter Lewis has been working on the project for fifteen years and he says the signs are different this time and he believes the community will be happy.
Lewis says the new facility will be state of the art. He emphasized that nothing would be lost as the new building will be a larger, better equipped version of what is already on site. He says the same number of patient care rooms, though bigger, with all the services the community has come to appreciate.
Lewis, who sits on the current doctor search committee, says the new hospital will definitely be attractive to physicians, saying it will offer all the needs of a modern medical practice.
The premier said the new Pugwash hospital was being fast-tracked as part of the province’s effort to restart the economy by proving construction jobs in the public sector. Stephen McNeil said construction would start this fall.
