Tension Surrounds Water Rescue Call
Pugwash Fire Department responded to its worst fear tonight — a water rescue call. Despite the extensive shoreline within its coverage area, Pugwash firefighters do not have a water rescue boat.
The call came at 8:31 and trucks were dispatched within minutes. One of those trucks headed to the harbour to borrow a boat.
With help waiting on shore, other boaters were able to get to the scene of an overturned catamaran and secure the occupants.
The sailors had been overturned by a gust of wind just off Beacon Boulevard, not far from the mouth of Pugwash Harbour. The catamaran remained with its mast stuck in the soft sand and mud.
Pugwash Fire has been fundraising for a rescue boat for the past ten years. Such a vessel would be equipped with specialized emergency needs and medical response capabilities to allow similar a similar fire/rescue response as offered on land.
