Coal Miners Hockey, a Slow Burn

The rubber match in senior hockey went to Buctouche last night in Springhill.

The New Brunswicker’s stole a home game from the Coal Miners, 5-2.

Buctouche took a 3 goal lead early in the second period before the Miners could get their offence in gear. Rene George—the scoring machine— initiated the offence at 2:19 of the second frame, but Buctouche turned back the challenge with two more goals.

Mitch O’Neil breathed life into the third period with a home-town goal from Nick Guill and Rene George, but that’s all the Miners could muster.

Springhill’s entry into the New Brunswick Senior League is not without promise. They have shown flashes of brilliance with a challenge of skating legs in back-to-back games. But the flashes can only improve as the legs get stronger with each outing.

Fans are being treated to some solid puck control, and offensive outbursts, particularly from George, and as it matures, the New Brunswickers will come to realise that nothing can be assumed from the new kids on the block.

Despite last night’s loss, the Coal Miners are in third place in the eight team loop. Each game is a learning experience and the skating legs and team building keep growing.

The Miners will be on the road next weekend for games against Shippagan and Tracadie. The road trip may set the stage for a big-time revival of hockey in Springhill. Stay tuned.
