Cumberland Calls for Wind Energy Moratorium
Cumberland County Council wants to “hit the pause button” on the wind energy proposal for Higgins Mountain in the Wentworth Valley.
Mayor Murray Scott says a lot of things have changed since the county passed a bylaw dealing with wind turbines back in 2007.
He noted that the industry has changed, the equipment is much bigger, and he feels the county bylaws should be reviewed to keep pace.
The mayor suggested a one year moratorium on all wind energy proposals in Cumberland. Councillor Kathy Redmond made the motion and council agreed, directing the Chief Administrative Officer to seek legal guidance on the question. District three councillor Jennifer Houghtaling offered the only nay vote.
The mayor says there are many questions being asked in the community and he says the community should have a full and sincere opportunity to express their fears and concerns.
Councillor Houghtaling suggested a moratorium in Cumberland might simply move the Higgins Mountain proposal to sites in Colchester County where they could still be visible from Cumberland. Mayor Scott said he believed Colchester County was considering the same action.
Mayor Scott and Councillor Kathy Redmond will be our guests on Morning Talk at 8:05 Thursday morning on Six Rivers Radio.
