Miners Bow Gracefully from Sr. Semi-Final
The Springhill Coal Miners gave their home fans a real taste of playoff hockey in the Beausejour Senior League last night, and more than their money’s worth too.
The Elsipogtog Hawks prevailed, but they really had to fight for it, in overtime too.
The Miners took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after the first period, thanks to a goal from Nick Guill, assisted by Rene George and Jordan Wentzell.
The Hawks tied it up at 7:06 of the second frame off the stick of Robbie Graham.
But, Parker Deighan restored the Miners lead with help from Marshall MacDonald and Zack Gould at 15:16.
The goal tenders put up the no scoring sign for the third period as fans edged closer to the front of their seats. However Robbie Graham struck again at the midway point of the period to knot the game and send it into overtime.
Imagine the buzz in anticipation of the OT. The Miners were playing the team that ran away with first place all season. They only lost four games all year.
The Hawks had over-powered Springhill in earlier encounters, some to embarrassment.
Yet, here they were, resting and regrouping for overtime. The home town fans were alive, charged, and adding to the momentum.
In the end, Scotty Sack netted the winner 6:15 into the extra frame and the Hawks captured the series three games to none in the league semi-final.
The 3-2 victory matched the score of game two played in North Kent.
The Miners had arrived. They proved they deserve to be there and they proved they can play with the league’s best.
Win, lose, or draw, The Springhill Coal Miners were a team tough to beat in their rookie year of senior hockey.
