Miners Knock-off First Place Rivals
Three times the Springhill Coal Miners answered the bell in Saturday’s bout with the first place Dalhousie Marauders in the Beausejour Senior Hockey League.
The Marauders came into town and scored at 13:41 of the first period. Within 33 seconds, R.D. Chisholm responded with help from Ryan MacDonald and Nick Jordan.
The visitors took the lead again in the second frame, this time with a pair. However, the Miners just roared back with their own brace to knot the game again, with scoring from Jesse Colborne (Kody Orr), and Jordan Wentzell (Mats Stone, Kody Orr).
The Marauders tried to set a tone for the third, scoring just a minute and seven seconds in, but once again, Springhill blasted back just 1:14 later to keep pace, thanks to the combination of Orr and Colborne.
The two teams settled for end-to-end action till the 12:30 mark of the final frame when the old marksman Rene George potted his only point of the night, assisted by Trevor Layton and R.D. Chisholm.
It proved to be the winner as the Miners held off the hard-charging Marauders — only their second loss of the season.
The victory moved Springhill into sole possession of second place. Dalhousie is tops with 5 wins, 2 losses and Springhill follows at 4 and 2 with a single for their earlier tie but overtime loss. The tracadie Alpines and Miramichi Northmen are tied just a point behind in the overly competitive senior loop.
The Coal Miners are in North Kent tonight to face-off with the Elsipogtog Hawks, last year’s runaway winners.
