Minister Approves Higgins Mountain Wind Farm

The Higgins Mountain Wind project has passed a major environmental hurdle. Nova Scotia's Minister of Environment has given his stamp of approval for the project.

While a major stepping stone on the long journey, the mega wind farm still faces a number of tests and conditions before any wind is captured.

The massive, 195 metre tall turbines — up to 17 of them — would straddle Cumberland and Colchester and be visible from the picturesque Wentworth Valley, home of the project’s most vocal opponents.

For example, the company cannot build or update a road before conducting a noise, light and flicker analysis to gauge the impact on residents and others. Any decision on the final placement of turbines must first be sent to the minister.

Similar limitations have been placed on protection of water resources, wildlife, flora and fauna — all requiring advance notice to the minister.

The Higgins Wind Farm Partnership has two years to begin meeting the conditions of the project.
