MLA Again Resorts to Blocking Tactic

The MLA for Cumberland North is once again using blocking tactics to gather attention.

Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin was the lone nay, denying the House of Assembly to continue debating a government bill yesterday. It means the members of the House must return on Monday, the Emancipation Day holiday.

The MLA demanded the Minister of Health commit again to a plan for a new emergency department at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, a department that is currently working from temporary quarters following a flood earlier this summer.

There had been no suggestion the $2.7 million plan had changed in any way. The minister of health confirmed the plan was still very much needed and was proceeding.

However, Smith-McCrossin chose to raise it as a concern, drawing attention to herself once again, as she did in a highway blockade of the Trans Canada Highway during the COVID shutdown.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Michelle Thompson, issued a public letter outlining the government’s continued commitment to assure the community there was no reason for such alarm.

Smith-McCrossin regularly points the finger at provincial officials vaguely suggesting something is amiss, a tactic that has further isolated her in the legislature.

The photo shows the MLA seated in the corner by the door.
