Attempted Murder Charge Laid in Pugwash
A Pugwash man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident yesterday near Home Hardware.
RCMP responded to a 911 call just before noon when a shot was fired from an apartment above the store. The intended victim was a 24 year-old woman.
Evan Taylor Vandewiel, age 28, faces eight charges, including:
- Attempted Murder Using a Firearm
- Assault with a Weapon
- Intentionally Discharging Firearm While Being Reckless
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Possession is Unauthorized
Members of the Cumberland County District RCMP, Colchester County District RCMP, Northwest RCMP Traffic Services, and RCMP Police Dog Services responded and secured the area, taking the man into custody safely.
He was transported to the Amherst RCMP Detachment where he spent the night in jail.
The two Pugwash schools and hospital were placed on lockdown for a short time as a precaution.
As part of the investigation, police executed a search warrant at the man's apartment and seized a replica firearm, ammunition, and a prohibited weapon.
Vandewiel will appear in Amherst Provincial Court today.
No one was injured during the incident.
