Bay Ferries Management Fee Guarantees Millions
Nova Scotia pays Bay Ferries management 1.17 million dollars each year, even when the ferries have not made a run between Yarmouth and Maine in three years.
The guaranteed management fee was released today by the ferry company, not the government which has steadfastly refused to reveal the amount despite a ruling under the Freedom of Information Act and, more recently a decision by the province’s highest court.
Nova Scotia’s official opposition has been seeking the details of the secret deal since 2016.
PC Leader Tim Houston said, “It should not have taken four years — two of them in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia — to get the answers that Nova Scotians deserve.” Houston added, “The Liberals tried to hide this fee because they were embarrassed. Their lack of transparency has been wilful and deliberate.”
Suing the government for the information was an unusual move by the PC Party. Even when the Supreme Court agreed, Premier Stephen McNeil remained mum.
Bay Ferries finally released the details today, without comment from McNeil or Premier Designate Iain Rankin.
