CAO Hints at Closing Pugwash Transfer Station
The chief administrative officer (CAO) for the Municipality of Cumberland is urging Pugwash area residents to be vigilant about vandalism at the community’s transfer station on Irishtown Road.
There have been a number of escalating acts of vandalism surrounding the locks and the gates at the station.
The CAO is sounding a warning about something no one wants to hear — the possible closure of the facility.
Greg Herrett says, “The frequency of vandalism to our locks and gates has escalated. It has to stop.”
Early in June, Public Works reinforced the gate with extra protection around a new lock, but someone cut the reinforcement and the new lock with power tools.
The damage was repaired with further reinforced protection. However, on June 27th, the station attendant discovered the gate had been dismantled and discarded in the adjacent ditch.
Thus far through July, garbage was dumped in front of the gate, the gate was removed and thrown aside, and finally, on July 25th, the lock was cut and the gate broken.
