County Helps Wallace and Oxford Recreation Programs
COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on community activities and resources. Closures, social distancing, and limited numbers have placed a strain on volunteer budgets, causing some to ask for help.
Cumberland Municipal Council was sympathetic tonight to a grant request from the Wallace Community Centre Society, a not-for-proft group of volunteers. Citing a cutback in events and limits on fundraising opportunities, the society asked for $3,000 in “emergency operation support”.
Council, which usually helps with a limited portion of grant proposals, agreed to the full requested amount. There was no opposition to the motion.
In a related request, the Oxford Regional Education Centre (OREC) requested permission to hold on to a grant issued by the county last year that never was spent.
The $2,150 grant supports recreation activity in the school, but the education centre closed for much of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
OREC asked to use the funds during the current school year and council readily agreed.
