County to De-register Springhill Church

The catholic church in Springhill — St. John the Baptist — is for sale and has asked Cumberland Council to rescind its heritage designation.

Once given to assist the church in fundraising, the special status is now an impediment to the sale.

In a sign of the times, the congregation is now using a much smaller facility and can no longer maintain the classic building. As a Municipal Heritage Property, the church cannot alter its design or structure, making it difficult to be re-purposed by a new owner.

Council agreed and the heritage status will be de-registered.
