COVID Continues to Soar, Is It Your Fault?
EDITORIAL
The COVID count in Nova Scotia continues to soar at alarming levels.
Health officials reported another 561 new cases today on the heels of 581 reported from testing on Boxing Day.
The Central Health Zone continues to lead the way, but that should be no surprise as it is the zone that includes the Halifax Regional Municipality. Not only is that the area of greatest population, it is also the region of highest concentration of people—the ideal breeding ground for spreading a virus.
It is also the reason why Dr. Robert Strang and health officials keep pounding the message for people to stay apart, at least two metres apart for people who are not in usual close quarters by virtue of family or employment.
It is also the reason why they reinforce the call for wearing a mask—not protection for you, but from you.
While you might think you are invincible or that you are strong enough to withstand the rigours of a COVID infection, you miss the point. Social distancing and masking are steps to limit the spread within the community. When you think you are exempt you are part of the problem, you are selfish, and uncaring for those around you.
Standing up to COVID is not about being macho. It is not about some elastic belief in rights or freedoms. It is about taking responsibility, about leadership, and about actually recognizing your place in community.
The next time you are standing among people who are wearing masks—you with your bare face hanging out—think about what that says about you!
