Eight Suspicious Fires and Counting
Arsonist at Work in New Salem
An arsonist is terrorizing the tiny community of New Salem in the southern half of Cumberland County.
There have been eight fires within three weeks, including two vehicles, two sheds, a barn, and three houses. All but one happened in the wee hours of the morning and, according to Don Fletcher, the local municipal councillor, it seems that one family is bearing the brunt of the losses. He says, “There’s roughly thirty-eight buildings left standing in New Salem.”
Fletcher says the Advocate Fire Department has stationed a truck in New Salem at the home of one of their firefighters. It proved to be a wise decision as it responded quickly to a house fire about noon yesterday.
Police have stepped up patrols in the community, and they are asking for information from residents.
The office of the Fire Marshal of Nova Scotia is now involved. An investigator is expected in the community to assess yesterday's house fire.
No one has been injured in any of the fires to date.
