Electric Vehicle Charger Coming to Pugwash
Pugwash is getting an electric vehicle charging station at the Farmers' Market.
The Village Commission agreed last night to share the seven thousand dollar cost with the Pugwash Farmer’s Market which will install the facility.
The market took the initiative and secured a provincial grant for half the cost then asked the village, which will own the facility, to cover the other half.
While there was some reluctance, the village commissioners understood that electric vehicles are a reality and will assume the future.
Commissioner Roger Mundle argued the EV station should not provide free charges. He noted the price of gasoline now includes a tax to encourage people to go electric. He said, “I pay extra for my gas, because they want to encourage people to use EVs, so they should pay something.”
There was a brief discussion about whether to charge for the service and if so, how much. They decided that decision can be made later. Right now, it is more important to get Pugwash on the EV map!
The village commission considered an EV station about three or four years ago. They asked the Municipality of Cumberland to install one but the issue quietly died away. The issue was revived by the Farmers’ Market, a group that repeatedly brings ideas to life.
