Ellis Calls for Minister’s Resignation
The report of the Mass Casualty Commission is due next month and most believe it can only be damaging for the RCMP.
The Commissioner of the RCMP, Brenda Lucki, resigned this week and opposition members of parliament are calling for a key federal cabinet minister to do the same.
The MP for Cumberland-Colchester says, “From the beginning, Conservatives have called on Brenda Lucki and Minister Bill Blair to resign for misleading Canadians about political interference and pressure they placed on Nova Scotia RCMP related to the Nova Scotia mass murder investigation.”
Dr. Stephen Ellis says, “RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki’s resignation will give some degree of solace to residents of Portapique who were not only scarred by the largest mass murder rampage in Canadian history but also put through further hardship as a result of the bungled investigation.”
Blair, the former Chief of the Toronto police force, is the federal Minister of Emergency Preparedness.
Ellis says, “Minister Blair and the Liberal government have refused to accept responsibility for their role in this shameful scandal.” He added that while Lucki has stepped down that does not exonerate Blair and he should also resign.
It was a public outcry, primarily from Portapique families, that forced the provincial and federal governments to launch the independent investigation which revealed the police mishandling, miscommunication, and political meddling into the overnight shooting rampage that began in Portaupique and claimed twenty-two lives.
