Firefighters Highlight Oxford Winter Carnival
Firefighters entertained again at the annual Oxford Fire Department Winter Carnival tonight.
Five departments were represented, including Westchester, Leicester, Springhill, Pugwash and the host, Oxford.
The Winter Carnival includes lots of kids activities with a special hockey game involving firefighters from the hometown. The kids also have a special skate, in costume. There were a few super heroes, a dragon, and some reluctant skaters.
Attendance was down this year as the Amherst Ramblers hosted a special night and incentive for county schools. The Carnival was scheduled for an open night, but the Ramblers re-scheduled a game that had been postponed earlier in the season.
The heavyweight events were the firefighter relay and tug-o-war. The relay which was a speed test to don the protective gear, roll out and couple two firehoses and a nozzle, run back and forth with a small bucket to fill a water bottle about 25 feet away, then have two firefighters exchange an air tank, and have the whole team run the length of the ice to the finish.
Springhill (photo below) disposed of Pugwash in the semi final, then came from behind to edge Oxford in the final.
The home side did not disappoint in the tug-o-war as Oxford easily slid Springhill along the ice for a lop-sided victory. Everybody ganged into the photo for the celebration.
