Growing Sinkhole Threatens Lions Park in Oxford
Emergency Management officials in Oxford are concerned that a giant sinkhole at the Lions Parkland may get larger before it settles. The town officials met this morning with the area Lions Club (owner’s of the Lions Parkland property), the RCMP, and the Department of Lands and Forestry.
The sinkhole was first noticed on Monday evening. It consumed a large tree and two picnic tables. The hole has since grown to just over 12 metres in diameter.
While most of Oxford sits on bedrock, the Parkland area has gypsum deposits that extend to the south and west of the town. The risk of sinkholes in the town is unlikely, however, secondary sinkholes in the Parkland area are possible, so the area is being monitored.
The Lions Parkland, Lions Den, and Salt Lake are closed till further notice. All activities at the Lions facility are cancelled with the exception of the Lions Bingo which is available through broadcast.
The current sinkhole is temporarily fenced. Permanent fencing or other solutions will be considered as soon as the area stabilizes.
While safety of the area is the prime concern, the Lions Club hopes to re-open their facilities as soon as possible but there is no way to estimate when until the area stops collapsing.
