Bill Martin / Thursday, July 19, 2018 / Categories: News Heather Beach Re-opens to Swimmers Updated water tests show bacteria counts have declined to acceptable levels, allowing officials to re-open Heather Beach. The beach was closed to swimmers on Monday. However, lifeguards are on duty again today. Water tests, conducted earlier today, show the popular beach is safe for swimming. Officials have not speculated on the source of bacteria, but it is well known that many cottages along the Northumberland shore dispose of sewage directly into the sea. The problem gets magnified during periods of heat and humidity. Heather Beach is one of the province’s 33 supervised swimming areas, where the water is tested regularly to protect swimmers. It is located off Highway 366 about 12 km from Pugwash.
