Imagination Library Overwhelmed in Cumberland
Over 250 kids are waiting to join Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Cumberland County.
The response to the launch of the creative and unique library-by-mail has overwhelmed the local resources.
The library was conceived by the very generous country music star through her Dollywood Foundation.
The concept is to provide books to pre-schoolers right from birth. Families register their children and literacy specialists select age specific books that start with parents reading to newborns and end at age five with the start of school. In between is a new book each month, delivered by mail directly to the child.
It not only starts a reading habit, it builds a child’s personal library.
The program is supported by fundraising and especially by individual local donors. A gift of $45 means twelve books a year.
Since the Cumberland launch just a few months ago, library leaders have been overjoyed at the response from families, but the fundraising side has not kept pace.
