Legislature Ready to Open with New Speaker
The Nova Scotia House of Assembly elected a speaker today, paving the way for the opening of the Legislature in mid October.
Keith Bain, the MLA for Victoria-The Lakes, was elected today in a special and modified session of the provincial house.
Bain, of the PC Party, was first elected to the House of Assembly in 2006 and re-elected in 2009, 2017 and 2021. He served as Deputy Speaker during the last general assembly.
Two newcomers to the House were elected as deputies, including Angela Simmonds, Liberal MLA for Preston, and Lisa Lachance, NDP MLA for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island. Both were elected in the most recent provincial election.
The Speaker presides over the legislative assembly, maintaining order and regulating debate in accordance with House rules and practices.
The Speaker decides questions of order, rules on questions, ensures that all viewpoints are heard, protects the rights of all members, and casts the deciding vote in the event of a tie.
The photo shows the three party leaders left to right: Tim Houston, Gary Burrill, and Iain Rankin, dragging, Keith Bain, as is the custom for a reluctant new Speaker of the House to his legislature post.
