LGBT Colours Waved in Pugwash
It was like the kick-off for Pride Week in Pugwash last night as the Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County offered an introduction to their Safer Spaces program.
Originally planned for Eaton Park, the threat of rain caused organizers to move the event to the Northumberland Curling Club, which was festooned with the rainbow colours of gay pride.
Safer Spaces is a community wide program designed to lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community, otherwise known as LGBTQ.
A series of passionate speakers talked about the struggle for rights and understanding as the LGBT seek their place as a true part of the community.
It was not a normal sight in Pugwash, as gay rights activists and educators tend to gather in larger centres. However, about one hundred gathered last night in the curling club for the presentation. Large events are planned for Pride Week, beginning today in Halifax.
