Litter Party Slowed but not Stopped
Strong winds and heavy rain didn’t stop the 2019 edition of the Litter Picking Party in Pugwash today.
More than 30 different groups spread across the village to clean up litter and celebrate Earth Day.
Keep Garbage Beneficial (KGB) and Pugwash Communities in Bloom (CiB) coordinate the clean-up day with support from the Pugwash Village Commission, Municipality of Cumberland, and Chesnutt Café.
CiB Chair, Maureen Leahey says, “Unfortunately, the litter pickers were far too successful.” It was Leahey’s back-handed way of pointing out the need to clean is getting greater, as they filled more than one hundred bags of garbage, mainly take out containers and disposable coffee cups, from streets and roadside ditches.
Frankie Ferdinand collected 23 bags alone, two more bagfuls than last year. Ferdinand, who made his haul yesterday, collected from just one kilometre along on Route 6.
The effort is usually conducted by a group formed largely of seniors, but this year they were joined in the clean up by students from Pugwash District High School and Cyrus Eaton Elementary.
