More Hurricane Support for People and Business
Nova Scotia launched a new website where residents can apply for financial assistance in the aftermath of hurricane Fiona.
Residents, business owners and non-profit organizations can find details on the types of assistance available and apply at: https://novascotia.ca/hurricane-fiona-support/.
Premier Tim Houston says, “We're making it as easy as possible for Nova Scotians to find supports and get the help they need during this challenging time.”
Applications are now open for:
- $100 for every household that lost power for at least 48 hours to help cover the cost of spoiled food
- up to $250 for every person who has to pay for tree removal from their property
- $1,000 per household for people ordered out of their homes or who cannot return to their homes; the Canadian Red Cross administers this assistance.
An additional $250 has been added to the seniors care grant to help with storm repairs. Everyone eligible applying for the grant will receive the extra funding. People who have already received the grant will also receive the additional $250 automatically.
All current income assistance households, including Disability Support Program participants receiving income assistance, will receive $150 in support automatically. These clients can also still apply for other types of support.
Applications to the Disaster Financial Assistance Program, which covers up to $200,000 in uninsurable losses per eligible household, small business, and not-for-profit organization, which was announced on Monday, are also available on the new website.
People with questions about the supports can also contact a new toll-free information line at 1-888-428-2256. The new toll-free number will be available Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 7 pm, but will not be available Friday, September 30, which is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. It will also be available this weekend and October 8-9, from 9 am to 2 pm.
