NS Embarks on International Missions, Virtually
A delegation from Nova Scotia’s forestry sector will conduct a mission to Sweden tomorrow without leaving home. It’s day one of a series of virtual, international initiatives.
Nova Scotia's delegation includes forestry transition team members, trustees of the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust, and forestry sector, academic, and government representatives. They will meet with representatives from Sweden's forestry sector and research institutions.
Lands and Forestry Minister Iain Rankin says, “Sweden is recognized internationally as a leader in forestry innovation and best practices. We appreciate the willingness of forestry experts in Sweden to share their knowledge with us and we look forward to building on this relationship in the future.”
The world’s oldest corporation is Sweden’s Stora Kopparberg which operated Stora Forest Industries, a pulp and paper mill near Port Hawkesbury for many years.
Discussions will focus on innovation, diversification, and forestry management to continue to support the transition of Nova Scotia's forestry sector since the closure of Northern Pulp in Pictou County.
A government release says one goal of the virtual missions is to strengthen relationships and develop partnerships to increase economic opportunities in Europe.
Similar events to Finland and Maine will follow in the fall.
