NS Liberal Party Under Investigation
The current session of the Nova Scotia Legislature opened with a little fireworks today following charges by Nova Scotia’s Auditor General (AG).
The AG, the independent watchdog over spending and accounting, called on the RCMP to investigate the NS Liberal Party for a cover-up over misuse of public funds.
The AG’s report details that the Liberal Party did not cooperate in the investigation into the misuse of public funds by the Liberals and that “considerable time and resources were spent dealing with this lack of compliance.”
The report considered the delays by the Liberal Party “an obstruction” to the Auditor General’s ability to investigate.
The Vice-Chair of the Legislature’s Public Accounts Committee said, “The Auditor General has revealed the Liberal Party’s egregious culture of cover-ups.” Nolan Young, MLA for Shelburne, added, “Nova Scotians deserve answers on how public funds were stolen under the Liberal Party’s watch.”
The current Liberal Leader, Zach Churchill, said that he inherited the situation, pointing to the two previous leaders Stephen McNeil and Iain Rankin. He did not respond to claims that the party still refuses to cooperate with the investigation under his leadership.
Nolan says, “It is difficult to have confidence in a party that has shown that Liberals will protect Liberals when it comes to theft.”
