’One Awesome Night’ Was, in Fact, Awesome
Tonight was indeed ‘One Awesome Night” at the farmers market in Pugwash. Area churches used the new farmers market as a backdrop for a live presentation of the Town of Bethlehem.
About 500 people filled the streets of the community, many in period costumes to replicate the night of the birth of Jesus Christ.
While the numbers matched the advanced estimates, there was something more compelling about the night of re-enactment. “People were genuinely happy,” said Bert McWade the de facto chair of the promotion.
Many asked if the ‘Awesome Night’ would be repeated every year, and it was clear the Farmers Market site was not only appropriate but, perhaps, ideal.
People wandered the historical Town of Bethlehem, participating in community activities while the Roman authorities were attempting to create the optimum tax collection system to ensure these far reaches of the Empire were properly contributing to Caesar’s tax demands.
A light snow fell on the scene, adding a dimension to the event. However, reports of slippery roads led organizers to believe the attendance could have been much higher.
