Oxford Adopts COVID Tax Relief Plan
The Town of Oxford has adopted a property tax payment plan to help those financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-time financing plan is open to both residential and commercial ratepayers.
Qualifying tax payers will get immediate relief on the 2020/2021 tax bill. Instead of paying the bill as presented, you pay twenty-five dollars a month for the first six months, then pay the balance in equal monthly payments over twenty-four months, with a 1.35% monthly interest charge.
You qualify if you are the owner of:
- a residential property that is your primary residence within the Town of Oxford and you have experienced a significant reduction in income due to the State of Emergency
- taxable commercial properties (shopping, office, industrial, farm) within the Town of Oxford who have experienced financial hardship through loss of sales (30% or more) related to the State of Emergency
- a property within the Town of Oxford that is used for tourist accommodations (hotel, motel, bed and breakfast) and you are tourism operator registered under the Tourist Accommodations Registration Act (excluding AirBnB)
Failure to make a monthly payment means suspension of the program and the balance of the remaining tax would be due immediately. The interest charge would also increase to 1.5%.
Online applications open on Monday at https://nspropertytaxprogram.ca/. The information is collected by the Association of Municipal Administrators (AMANS) and the Federation of Nova Scotia Municipalities (NSFM) and will be forwarded to the Town of Oxford for review and approval.
The application deadline is June 30th.
