Oxford Arena Must Face Economic Reality
The Town of Oxford saw its last Town Council meeting of the year last night, as council members wrapped up the year's business with an eye toward 2020.
The Oxford Arena tops the list of concerns before Town Council right now as ice rentals are not keeping pace with the budget.
It's an expensive facility that has been described as the heart of the community, but with fewer organizations renting ice time, particularly minor hockey, the arena is costing far more to operate than it can take in.
The free public skates, three days a week, continue to be popular with residents, particularly the new sticks & pucks events twice a week.
Advertising has seen a boost this year, with new companies and groups purchasing space on the arena walls. And a beautiful new paint job under the ice brought rave reviews of the space.
The town has invested heavily over the years to improve the arena's dressing rooms, infrastructure, and programming. The question remains: What will it take to put more people on the ice?
