Oxford Christmas Parade Lifts Spirits
The Mayor of Oxford says the purpose of the town's Christmas Parade is to lift the community spirit. Tonight's 12th annual did that and maybe much more.
Trish Stewart says the town council hoped a festive parade might inject a little spirit during winter. If tonight's parade is any example, three cheers for Oxford.
Santa was there too, and not only did he anchor the final float of the parade, the jolly old fellow met with the children after the parade, posing for pictures at Heritage Square. The families were lined up half way down the block to greet Santa.
The streets were lined with cars over an hour before the parade started. And, you could not count the supporters, not in the hundreds, but over a thousand. The entire parade route, along three streets, were lined on both sides with very appreciative on-lookers. One visiting spectator said, "This parade puts Truro's to shame."
The Oxford parade is a true community event, with local businesses joining with community groups to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. In recent years there has been much debate about how we address the season, but there was no mistake tonight in Oxford. As people were leaving the downtown, the common exchange was "Merry Christmas."
