Oxford Council Pitched for NSCC Funding
A high percentage of Oxford town councillors had children graduate from the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), which made David Hoffman’s ask for donations a little easier tonight.
Many hands went up when Mayor Trish Stewart asked how many in the room had children graduate from NSCC.
Hoffman suggested a donation around $20,000 which could be paid over a period of four to five years.
The objective for the Cumberland County region in the province-wide campaign to help students is $1.5 million but Hoffman says $600,000 has already been raised.
Hoffman said the NSCC plays an important role in economic development with 95% of graduates staying in Nova Scotia and 85% finding work in their field of study.
He said, “We’re training them for jobs that are available here.”
Hoffman said municipalities can have a say in how their donations are used and all Cumberland donations stay here.
Campaign funds can be used to help with costs such as tuition, and as emergency aid for students. He said, “$2000 a year would make an enormous difference in their lives.”
