Oxford Girls in Baseball Championship Final
Still undefeated on the year, it is no surprise the Oxford U14 girls are in the final of the Nova Scotia Girls Baseball Championship at Oakfield Park near Grand Lake.
The Oxford Wildcats completed the four-game round robin with a 10-4 victory over Hammonds Plains.
However, the win did not come easy. Coach Joe Reade says, “We got off to a slow start. Their ace went four innings and held us 4-3 when she had to come out.”
Reade says then we got hot. Fierra Foley launched a two run triple while Emma Reade contributed a pair of RBI singles.
Julia Sharpe threw 50 pitches holding the Wildcats in the game for three innings.
Oxford maintained a 4 and 0 record in the tourney while their arch rival, Tri-County, went 3 and 1, their only loss at the hands of Oxford.
That sets up an interesting final this morning at 11:30. It is a double knock-out tourney. The Wildcats can win it all with another victory over Tri-County, while the HRM team will have to beat Oxford twice to take home the trophy.
The tournament format places a lot of importance on pitching and the rules limit how many pitches can be thrown. Reade likens it to a chess match and he says, “We kept some pieces to move around the board. We still have fuel.”
The coach is leaning to Emma Reade to start the next game but that decision will be made at a coaches meeting just before the game.
