Oxford Grad Fireworks Causes Fireworks
For students in Oxford, this week is the culmination of years of hard work. The graduating class of 2022 is larger than in previous years, and unlike the past two years, the grads will be able to celebrate together with the lifting of many COVID-19 restrictions.
Oxford CAO Linda Cloney says the town is excited to see this latest crop of grads, adding that the banners lining Main Street have brought smiles to many.
Oxford Town Council approved support from the public works crew to have the banners hung again this year as the municipality’s contribution to recognizing OREC graduates.
Still with graduation in Oxford this week… local businessman, house-mover, and the fellow who filled in the infamous Oxford Sink Hole, Mervil Rushton, announced his Salt Lake property, near the Highway 104 connector, will see fireworks light up the night in celebration tomorrow evening.
That prompted some local pet owners and others to express their concern over the issue of noise that accompanies fireworks displays.
This is an issue that in recent years has come up in the context of parades, with care taken to reserve an area where sirens, flashing lights, and other factors that could cause harm in sensitive people (such as those with autism and other neurodivergent concerns) would be reduced or eliminated.
Pet owners are bringing that same degree of concern to the plight of their furry friends, whose comfort may be disturbed.
