Oxford the Trans-Canada Trail Destination
Folks on the South Side of Oxford may have noticed a new structure at the crossroads of Water Street and the old rail bed—for many years now in use as the Trans-Canada Trail.
The Town of Oxford agreed to provide space at the Oxford Trail Head to install an information kiosk. The Cumberland Trails Association, says additional signage is planned for this fall to help guide existing and new users of the trail.
Current upgrades to the trail are intended to "turn the old rail bed from Oxford to Tatamagouche into a 'Destination Trail.
The town will also ensure winter plowing and summer maintenance of the parking area, where local residents and visitors alike offload their off-road vehicles and embark along the trail, which connects to the east with the Colchester section of the Trans-Canada Trail.
This 40-kilometre section links Oxford with Wallace, and provides folks in motorized off-road vehicles, bicycles, and hikers a well-maintained path as they enjoy the natural wonders along the way.
Also in the works is an offloading ramp for ATVs and snowmobiles.
The Cumberland Trails Association is planning to improve trail access from the "Big Blueberry" near Oxford's connector to the Trans-Canada Highway.
Funding for trail development comes from community members, the Municipality of Cumberland County, the Trans-Canada Trail national charity, and various other supporters.
The Town of Oxford has enthusiastically supported efforts to develop multi-use trails in the area, providing more options for outdoor recreation to local residents, and to promote trail tourism that may bring new visitors to visit the community.
