Pancakes Stacked Higher for Wallace Firefighters
The Wallace Fire Department is celebrating the success of their best ever Pancake Brunch.
Over 450 people attended the fire department's annual Pancake Brunch held yesterday at the community hall in Wallace. That's an increase of 100 over last year's event.
The work began early in the morning as firefighters prepared for the onslaught that would follow. Serving started at 11 am and continued till six. Sometimes called a "breakfast", Wallace has turned it into lunch and supper and some planned to take advantage of the service for both meals that day.
People were lined up at the opening, but things really started hopping when the church crowd started to roll in. There was a steady line waiting to be served and guests came and went, satisfied with a belly full.
The fare is pretty simple, a couple of pancakes, some maple sausages, and home-baked beans. But the dessert was to die for. Home made pies of all flavours were a hit. While some had to wait for their main course, more time was spent at the dessert table in trying to decide which delight to take.
The pancake brunch has become a popular, annual fundraiser for the fire department. A visitor said, "It is a good cause , a good lunch, and a good way to get together with friends all at the same time."
Lisa Betts, a member of the organizing committee, says, "It's a great community event. The beans, the breads, and the biscuits are donated by the community." She added, "The whole community gets involved and it is a nice community effort."
The Wallace Fire Department is waiting to move into its new firehall. When asked if the pancake brunch would move into the new hall next year, Betts said, "That's something we'll have to think about. We'll have the room and it would be nice, but we'll see."
