Popular Librarian Says Goodbye in Oxford
One of the most familiar workers in downtown Oxford is calling it quits. She reached 65 and says, “It's time to let someone else have the job.”
Debra Millard officially retired today after 32 years with the Oxford library.
“I'll miss it. I’ll miss the people desperately. We had some wonderful, wonderful people come in here,” she said.
The Cumberland Regional Library Board put on a little party spanning three hours this afternoon and two hours this evening. “It was busy, busy, busy,” she says, “Well-wishers were constantly coming and going.”
A Grade 12 education was required when Debra first started working at the library. She had been to teacher's college. “I think the best qualification is you have to like people and you have to like books.”
The arrival of computers, in the mid-90s, was the biggest change Debra experienced during her three decades with the library. No more stamping books, all the information she'd need was just a few clicks away.
What's next for Debra? She's not worried about what to do. She and husband Rubin, of Grumpy's Bakery fame, are always busy, referring to “Church, Lions Club and all the volunteer work we do!”
In the attached photo, Debra shows a plaque and flowers she received from the town, and a certificate from Cumberland-Colchester MP Bill Casey.
