Prom Night Pugwash Style
Prom night may be a rite of passage for teens, but in Pugwash it is a big community event. As a regional high school, graduation and the prom bring people from all around. Eaton Park, on the village waterfront, is the venue for the community gathering.
Families come for photos in the picturesque setting, and it soon becomes a photographers' melee, as friends gather, groups are formed, and the graduating class is assembled.
Eaton Park offers great photo possibilities. The harbour is a favourite backdrop, as are the trees, shrubs, and flower beds. On this occasion, an ocean going tanker is part of the scene, loading salt in the distance.
Proud parents are popping keepsake photos while grandparents note how surprised they are that he or she is old enough to be graduating. One lady said, "It is wonderful to see them in their gowns and finest, but it also makes me feel old."
Once the photo opp is complete, the regally dressed head to the Lobster Factory for the prom, while friends and families head home.
It may sound odd to people from outside the community, but having the village take part in prom night is just one of the perks of living in a rural setting in Six Rivers. Here, community is very important, and learning that starts at an early age.
