Province Bans Highway and Road Blockades
It is now illegal for protesters to block highways, roads, or streets in Nova Scotia.
The Province issued a ban under the Emergency Management Act yesterday but it will only be enforced as long as the provincial state of emergency which was imposed with the COVID pandemic. The state of emergency was declared under the Emergency Management Act on March 22, 2020, and has been extended every two weeks, currently expiring February 20th.
The new move follows a similar directive issued January 28 banning protesters from organizing a blockade of Highway 104 at the Nova Scotia-New Brunswick border in support of the 2022 Freedom Convoy and the Atlantic Hold the Line event.
Individuals can be fined from $3,000 to $10,000, while corporations could be fined between $20,000 and $100,000 for failing to comply.
Outdoor gatherings of more than ten people are prohibited under the Health Protection order. Blocking a road or highway is also an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.
