Province Supports New Oxford Centre

Oxford is getting a new community centre thanks to a province-wide initiative announced today by the MLA for Cumberland South.

Tory Rushton held a press conference at the Oxford fire hall to announce a $7 million grant to build the new community facility.

Rushton said, “This is an incredible day for the people of Oxford. This investment is giving the community so much more than just a new building.”

The new community centre will have a walking track, gymnasium, meeting and community rooms, child care, a library, commercial rental spaces, and a full-service kitchen.

One thing not mentioned was the prospect of relocating the town office from its aged facility on Main Street.

The announcement is part of new provincial investments in local arts, cultural, and community organizations across the province.

Eleven organizations are receiving about $15.5 million for new or upgraded infrastructure, including the $7 million for the new community centre in Oxford.

Matthew Bragg, Vice-President of the Oxford Community Centre Association says, “This investment from the Province shows their support to rural communities and allowing continued growth.”

Brag says, “A centre that will have services available that today are desperately missing will allow us to continue to grow as individuals and as a community.”

He added, “This is about building a sustainable community centre that will retain and attract residents from across Nova Scotia, Canada and around the world.”
