Public In-Person Meetings Not Allowed
While public meetings have generally been suspended during the coronavirus pandemic, it is now law in Nova Scotia that meetings of municipalities— county, town, or village — can no longer take place in person.
In a letter from the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Chuck Porter makes it clear that virtual meetings may be convened by video or telephone.
However, Porter says virtual meetings must be recorded and minutes must be posted to a public website within 24 hours of the meeting.
The letter warns, “A failure to comply with this direction could result in a summary conviction with fines between $500 to $10,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for a corporation per incident.”
The order would be lifted with the end of the provincial State of Emergency or earlier if the minister terminates the order in writing.
