Pugwash Landfill to Reopen with New Rules

The Pugwash Transfer Station will reopen tomorrow but with new restrictions.

The Municipality of Cumberland suddenly suspended the service a few weeks ago following a barrage of break-ins and malicious damage.

Effective immediately, the Pugwash site will now only handle construction and demolition waste and brush.

Scrap metal and white goods will no longer be accepted at the facility, and the organics bin has been removed from the property. Staff are working on establishing an alternate location.

All loads entering the facility are subject to inspection.

The facility on the Irishtown Road will resume Tuesday and Saturday service from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Meanwhile, the reuse centre will be set up outside the gates of the transfer station where people can drop off building materials that can be used by others.

Scrap metal and white goods can be taken to the Mount Pleasant construction and demolition site, to the Little Forks central landfill, or the Nova 4 Enviro in Amherst at no cost.

The municipality closed the facility in December due to continuous vandalism that included cutting the lock, the chain, and even the gate itself, as well as theft of metal materials. There was also a problem with illegal dumping of unsorted residential garbage in and around the area of the organics dumpster and the facility’s gate.

The municipality is asking for the cooperation of area residents and users of the facility in complying with the regulations at the site and to report any knowledge of individuals committing the property damage to the RCMP and/or the municipality.
