Pugwash Library Readies for Move
UPDATED DUE TO CHANGE OF DATE
Durham Street in Pugwash will be closed tomorrow to allow installation of electrical and data services for the new library.
The street will be blocked in front of the new building at 8:00 am today, but officials moved the effort to Wednesday. Detours will allow traffic to flow throughout the business district.
Work may last into Thursday.
The library is in the final stages of construction and the books and fixtures may begin their move before Christmas.
Project manager Roger MacIsaac said the $2.198-million library is nearing completion despite some serious hiccups caused by post tropical storm Fiona in September.
MacIsaac says, they set a deadline of mid-December and “Things are progressing in a timely fashion.”
The library hopes to reopen in its new home in late January or early February.
While the existing library will close during the move, people can still access books through borrow by mail. Call 902-667-2549 for further details.
Library staff are excited about the move, as the new larger space will allow so many things that were restricted by the much smaller footprint. For example, the book club will be able to meet during regular hours, something not possible previously because the old train station could not accommodate the club and the visitor traffic.
Pugwash is already the largest attended outlet—per capita—in the Cumberland Library service and staff expect that to increase dramatically in the new home.
