Pugwash Open Air Gallery Gets a Big Boost
UPDATED
Pugwash Communities in Bloom will receive $10,000 from the Nova Scotia Beautification and Streetscaping Program. CiB is one of 50 organizations across the province, but the only recipient in Cumberland County.
The program is designed to develop attractive and inviting areas while rejuvenating communities and fostering local pride.
The province is contributing $629,476 spread over the fifty projects. The grants cover up to fifty percent of project costs, to a maximum of 25 thousand.
The Chair of the local Communities in Bloom says, “We’re excited. We’re thrilled!” Maureen Leahey says, “This is a chance for local artists work to be displayed in public. It will be a nice draw for tourists and visitors to Pugwash, good for culture and the economy.”
The Pugwash Open Air Gallery is one of the more creative endeavours on the list. CiB plans to install prints of local art on buildings throughout the village. The pieces will be of various sizes, in keeping with the available wall space.
The Pugwash project has been in the works for more than a year but stalled with the public health restrictions brought on last spring by the coronavirus pandemic. A panel of judges has selected a number of artworks to be included, and agreements were reached for the installation on numerous private and public buildings. The grant will be a welcome shot in the arm to advance the project quickly.
The fit with CiB and the provincial program is a natural. Both are committed to beautification with the ultimate goal of increasing community pride and fostering economic development.
