Pugwash the Best Bloomin’ Village in Canada
Pugwash is the winner of the 2022 Class of Champions in the ‘small category’.
The award was announced last night at the Communities in Bloom (CiB) 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Victoria, BC.
The community received a rating of 5 Blooms—Silver from a panel of international judges who visited during the summer. The Village was in competition with Kinistino SK.
The community also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Community Involvement along with a special mention for Prospering Partnerships.
The trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate community appearance, environmental action, heritage conservation, tree management, landscape, along with plant & floral displays.
The judges considered Pugwash in the context of a small community with overall contributions from local government, industry, business, and especially volunteers.
The judges—Lorna McIlroy and Linda Tomlinson—noted the Village population swells about seven fold in summer with the influx of cottagers and visitors. They said, “Volunteer dedication has enabled Pugwash to host this quantity of visitors and be one of the best places to live in Canada.”
Described as “a vibrant community of enthusiastic people,” McIlroy and Tomlinson added, “Amazingly, this small village has more than 60 volunteer organizations.”
Citing local CiB partnerships and cooperation, the judges said “Collaborative Partnerships enable the community to grow and bloom.”
The Communities in Bloom program benefits all of society. It is not just about beautification—although that plays a large part—it is ultimately about community pride leading a sense of community.
