Rain Slowly Affecting the Oxford Sinkhole
The overnight rain has not caused any significant changes in the overall dimensions of the sinkhole in Oxford.
Some erosion took place on the perimeter, much the same as what occurred over the past week.
The area highlighted in the photo is where most of the parking lot runoff flowed into cracks in the pavement near the edge of the sinkhole. The erosion of soil under the asphalt increased the overall size of the sinkhole by about 30 centimetres.
New cracks have been found in the earth behind the sinkhole (as shown in the photo below) and are being monitored for further movement or expansion.
The public is reminded that the area remains unstable and unpredictable, so access to the area is prohibited and trespassers will be prosecuted.
A public information meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 20 at 7pm at the Oxford Volunteer Fire Hall.
Emergency officials continue their vigil around the sinkhole. The level of risk remains the same as previously reported.
